Inhabitants of villages in east Georgia to undergo mandatory PCR testing for COVID-19

The inhabitants of Karajala and Karataklia  villages in Gardabani municipality will undergo mandatory PCR (polymerase chain reaction) testing for the coronavirus, as 23 inhabitants of the villages have tested positive for the virus over the last 24 hours.

Out of the 22 newly infected individuals, 15 are inhabitants of Karajala.

Six teams of epidemiologists are now working in the Karajala village of eastern Georgia.

Mtavari Arkhi reports that 700 individuals have been already tested for COVID-19 and the results will be known in 24 hours.

Epidemiologists and the members of the Georgian government held an Inter-agency Coordination Council meeting earlier today. 

After the meeting the head of the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) Amiran Gamkrelidze told the media that the inhabitants of the Gardabani municipality will undergo mandatory PCR testing and medics will thermoscreen them in order to prevent the risk of further spreading of the virus.

Georgia has reported 10 new cases of the coronavirus earlier today, bringing the total number of cases to 1,049.

903 of the 1,049 patients have recovered, while 16 others have died.

Three of the 10 new cases are imported (one is a truck driver), five individuals had contact with infected people, while the remaining two do not know how they contracted the virus.
