The academic year will end on June 15 in Georgian schools, while twelfth grade and first grade students will have a different schedule with the academic year ending on May 20 and on May 27 respectively, said Georgian Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia at a presentation of the government’s anti-crisis plan for education earlier today.

Georgian schools were closed on May 4, 2020 to prevent the spread of the new coronavirus in the country.

We took the necessary steps in education very early on in order to reduce the number of infected people as a result of which studies in schools were stopped starting March 4. This was critical not only to reduce infection in the education sector but in the society as a whole,” said Gakharia.

The Ministry of Education then started the implementation of online lessons.

Also, the Georgian Public Broadcaster (GPB) has been broadcasting live lessons for school children since March 30 amid the coronavirus outbreak in Georgia.

Gakharia said that the reform in the education system is one of the main priorities of Georgia.

No one knows exactly what the post-pandemic world will be like, but it is clear that global competition will be fiercer and we must do everything we can to ensure that our young people, children, schoolchildren and students are ready to take their place in the global competition,” said Gakharia.

He noted that both human and financial resources should be mobilized to complete the reform of the education system.
