Georgia needs to industrialise the agricultural sector and increase productivity, Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia said earlier today at a presentation of the government’s agricultural anti-crisis plan.

Agricultural food security is critically important for our country. For this reason, the agricultural [production] process cannot be stopped for a single second. In rural areas farmers must continue working and there must not be uncultivated land left,” said Gakharia.

The PM noted that the deficit of agricultural produce (difference between imports and exports of agricultural food) had decreased from $900 million to $350 million.

We have to urge the citizens of the country to buy Georgian products which are improving in quality, and after agricultural food security is ensured we have to do everything to make our  products more competitive on international markets.”

The government presented its agricultural anti-crisis plan today, with the vision involving support for farmers through various state programmes.
