Georgia granted asylum to 82 foreign citizens during the period of January 1 to December 20 2018, announces Georgia’s Ministry of Internal Affairs.

The majority of the people granted asylum in Georgia were citizens of:

  • Egypt – 20 citizens (status of refugee)
  • Yemen – 18 citizens (humanitarian status)
  • Iraq – 15 (status of refugee)

On the other hand, the smallest number of citizens granted asylum by Georgia came from:

  • Somali (one person)
  • Russia (one person)
  • Pakistan (one person)

Out of 82 foreign citizens the status of refugee was granted to 51 of them while humanitarian status was given to 31 them.

During the same period, 940 people sought asylum in Georgia, including 216 citizens of Iran, 76 from Yemen and 72 Iraqis.
