Georgia granted asylum to 82 foreign citizens during the period of January 1 to December 20 2018, announces Georgia’s Ministry of Internal Affairs.
The majority of the people granted asylum in Georgia were citizens of:
- Egypt – 20 citizens (status of refugee)
- Yemen – 18 citizens (humanitarian status)
- Iraq – 15 (status of refugee)
On the other hand, the smallest number of citizens granted asylum by Georgia came from:
- Somali (one person)
- Russia (one person)
- Pakistan (one person)
Out of 82 foreign citizens the status of refugee was granted to 51 of them while humanitarian status was given to 31 them.
During the same period, 940 people sought asylum in Georgia, including 216 citizens of Iran, 76 from Yemen and 72 Iraqis.
The Danish Ministry for Immigration, Integration and Housing says that the number of Georgian asylum seekers has decreased in the country due to the efforts of the Georgian Dream government.
Georgian Interior Minister has discussed steps taken by Georgia towards reducing asylum seekers from the country with his German colleague Horst Seehofer pointing out that there is a positive dynamic in terms of a decrease in their number.
Asylum seekers from war-torn countries wanting to seek shelter in Georgia will be granted special permission to stay in the country for one year, says a Georgian official.
Almost a thousand foreign citizens are seeking asylum in Georgia, including people from Syria and Iraq who are fleeing conflict on their home soil, says Georgia’s Public Defender Ucha Nanuashvili.
The number of Georgian asylum seekers in Denmark has decreased three times compared to last year, Danish Immigration Service reports.
Georgian citizens have submitted 14,970 asylum requests to European Union member states and Schengen Area countries, an increase of 68 percent compared to 2021, the latest report of the European Union Agency for Asylum shows.
