World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD), March 21, is a global awareness day which has been officially observed by the United Nations since 2012.
Down Syndrome is a type of mental retardation caused by extra genetic material in chromosome 21.

This can be due to a process called nondisjunction, in which genetic materials fail to separate during a crucial part of the formation of gametes, resulting in an extra chromosome (called trisomy 21).
Down Syndrome International (DSi) encourages people all over the world to choose their own activities and events on WDSD to help raise awareness of what Down syndrome is and how people with Down syndrome play a vital role in our lives and communities.
The estimated incidence of Down Syndrome is between 1 in 1,000 to 1 in 1,100 live births worldwide.
