Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili attended the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall in Tbilisi yesterday.
At the reception hosted by the German Ambassador to Georgia Hubert Knirsch, President Zurabishvili said that “Germany shows us that unifying our country and ending the occupation is possible”.
Today, our wall is the barbed wires on the occupation line, hate speech, intolerance. Tearing these down depends on us”, Zurabishvili said.

Foreign Minister David Zalkaliani also wrote on his Twitter that what happened 30 years ago in Germany “is a clear proof that nothing can stop aspirations for freedom and unity”.

On the evening of November 9, 1989, east Germany announced an easing of travel restrictions to the west and thousands demanded passage through the Berlin Wall, which had been dividing people since 1961.
The German Embassy to Georgia has stated that ‘borders which are based on inhumanity will never last long,’ urging Russia and its controlled de facto government of Tskhinvali to recall why the Berlin Wall collapsed.
An artistic display connecting remains of the Berlin Wall with the ongoing separation of Georgia’s occupied regions from the rest of the country hosted viewers outside the German capital on Saturday.
A piece from the Berlin Wall has been installed in Old Tbilisi today as a symbol of Georgian-German friendship. Prime Minister Kvirikashvili received a piece of the wall during his visit to Germany in June this year.
A documentary film by Georgian director Toma Chagelishvili, shot at a Georgian village at the centre of Russia’s creeping occupation, was awarded with a special prize by the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam (IDFA).
