One of the world's leading publications, the Financial Times, has recently released an article on the importance of a free trade agreement between the United States and Georgia.
Strategically, commercially and, not least, morally, responding now to Georgia’s oft-stated desire for the launch of negotiations on an FTA makes sound sense for the US”, its author James Bacchus says.
Georgian Foreign Minister David Zalkaliani also considers that it is time "to further develop strategic partnership with US in the field of economy".

US Congressmen have urged the US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer to start negotiations with Georgia on a free trade regime last year.
Later on this year, US Department of Commerce and then Georgian Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development signed a memorandum of understanding on cooperation to enhance bilateral trade relations as well.
Georgian Economy Minister Natia Turnava stated at the 3rd annual US-Georgia strategic partnership conference in Washington D.C. that a free trade agreement between Georgia and the US is the best way to deepen economic cooperation between the countries.
The United States Department of Commerce and the Georgian Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development signed a memorandum of understanding on cooperation to enhance bilateral trade relations. The document was signed after the meeting between the Georgian Prime Minister Mamuka Bakhtadze and the US Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross.

The US Heritage Foundation has released its report by fellow researcher Alexis Mrachek on the top priorities in the US Georgia relations this year, stating that it will be ‘an important year’ for the relations. The report reads that after 2019 street protests in Tbilisi, the 2020 parliamentary elections in Georgia ‘will likely be tumultuous.’ Mrachek says that Georgia will be faced with ‘multiple challenges this year,’ stating that the fate of the October parliamentary elections and the Anaklia Port project are uncertain.
