Georgian winemakers: wine experts in New York interested in Georgian qvevri wine

Georgian qvevri wine producers are participating in the international artisan wine fair ‘Raw Wine’ currently  taking place in New York, USA on October 27-28.

'Raw Wine' is a two-day exhibition showcasing some of the best natural wines from all over the world.

Featuring over 100 growers, Raw Wine is one of the most exciting collections of fine, natural, organic and biodynamic wine artisans… Their wines are pure, kind to the planet, very possibly better for your health and best of all they’re absolutely delicious,” says the website of the event.

Ten Georgian wine makers will take part in the fair,   allowing visitors to taste Georgian qvevri wines including Rkatsiteli, Saperavi, Krakhuna, Tsitska, Tsolikauri, and Mtsvane.

Georgian winemakers say that there is growing international interest in Georgian wines among wine experts and wine drinkers.

A qvevri is a traditional Georgian wine-making vessel which is usually buried in the ground or set on the floor inside large cellars. It is used for fermentation, storage and ageing of wine. 

Georgia received 16% more in revenue from the export of wine in the first nine months of 2019 in comparison to the same period last year, reports the National Wine Agency of Georgia.

The top three countries importing the most bottles of Georgian wine in 2019 are: 

  • Russia – 41,112,235 bottles
  • Ukraine – 6,766,841 bottles
  • China – 5,334,939 bottles

The Georgian wine makers are being  supported by the National Wine Agency of Georgia.

Wine makers participating in New York wine fair will also present at Raw Wine in Los Angeles on November 3-4, reports the National Wine Agency of Georgia.
