Russian President Vladimir Putin has vowed to ensure all possible support for the“national security” of Georgia’s occupied Abkhazia region in his letter sent to de facto president of the region Raul Khajimba, Russian new agency RIA Novosti reports.
The agency says that the letter was sent on the occasion of the ‘national holiday of Abkhazia - the Day of Independence and Victory.”
In the letter Putin also promises his support in resolving social and economic problems.
Last week Putin ordered the government to allocate funds for the “modernisation” of the armed forces of Georgia’s occupied Abkhazia region.
Abkhazia and Tskhinvali regions of Georgia have only been recognised as independent states by Russia, Venezuela, Nicaragua, Nauru and Syria since the Russia-Georgia 2008 war.
The rest of the international community is unanimous in that the regions are occupied by Russia and the country must withdraw its troops from Georgian territory.
