The construction of a three-kilometre bypass road in the popular ski resort town of Bakuriani has opened, and will hopefully lead to a decrease of large traffic jams during the winter season, the Georgian Municipal Development Fund announces.

The bypass will go around Bakuriani and lead to the Didveli ski zone.

The area has long been subjected to frequent traffic jams because of weather conditions and large seasonal flows of skiers and cargo transit.

The total cost of the project was more than 6.3 million GEL (about $2.12 mln/€1.84 mln) and was financed by the European Investment Bank.

Construction of the road started in June 2018 by the Municipal Development Fund and was completed in September of this year.

The Municipal Development Fund is investing 55 million GEL ($18.5 mln/€16 mln) to implement a number of major infrastructure projects in Bakuriani.

Furthermore, international company Doppelmayr Garaventa Group will build three new ski lifts in Bakuriani to help the resort get ready to host the 2023 Freestyle Ski and Snowboard World Championships.
