Georgian residents spent 617.5 million GEL while travelling abroad in Q2 of 2019

A total of 780,100 Georgian citizens travelled outside of Georgia in the second quarter (Q2) of 2019.

Most of these trips, 45.3% were made by travellers between the ages of 31 and 50, show the latest data published by the National Statistics Office of Georgia (Geostat).

The number of outbound visits by Georgian visitors (travellers aged 15+, who travels for less than a year excluding reasons related to employment, diplomacy or armed force) totalled 561,000 said Geostat.

In the reporting period the number of Georgian resident visitors abroad equalled 417,100.

Georgian visitors made 325,600  tourist-type and 235,400 same-day visits abroad, said Geostat.

In Q2 of 2019, 60.3% of Georgian resident visitors were only tourists (a visitor whose trip includes an overnight stay abroad). 

The share of visitors whose trip does not include an overnight stay abroad amounted to 34.6%.

Most of the visitors (44.8%) were people aged 31-50. In terms of gender, women comprised 44.6% of the total number of visitors.

The top reasons for visiting other countries included:

  • Visiting friends/relatives – 209,500 visits (37.3%)
  • Shopping –147,600 visits (26.3%)
  • Business – 102,100 visits (18.2%)
  • Holiday/Leisure/Recreation – 71,900 visits (12.8%)
  • Health and medical care – 19,300 visits (3.4%)
  • Other – 10,700 travellers (1.9%)

The majority of outbound visits were made to Turkey (255,300) and Azerbaijan (117,900), said Geostat.

In Q2 of 2019 the average number of nights spent during the outbound visits was 3.8 nights.

Meanwhile, 94.9% of outbound visits were repeat visits, said Geostat.

Georgian residents spent 617.5 million GEL (about $210.5/€190.1 million) while travelling abroad in Q2 of 2019. The average expenditure of a visit amounted to 1,100.7 GEL (about $375.2/€338.8).
