The Criminal Man, the latest feature by Georgian director Dmitry Mamuliya, is among films selected to be screened at this year’s Venice Biennale, when the cinema section of major international artistic event opens next week.
At the 76th edition of the Venice International Film Festival, organised as part of the biennial, the Georgian-Russian co-production will be introduced to viewers in the Horizons section.
Featuring a cast of Georgian actors, The Criminal Man follows a young engineer whose life takes a dramatic turn after he becomes a witness to the murder of a popular sportsperson.

Produced at the Tbilisi-based Millimeter Film, the work involved co-production effort by Mikhail Karasev and Tamara Nikishina. Anton Gromov and Alisher Khamidkhodzhaev created cinematography for the feature, while Georgian artists Nika Kocharov and Sophie Villy wrote the musical score for the film.
In six screenings at the festival, Mamuliya’s feature-length work will be in one of the eight film sections and will be part of the competitive line-up.
The filmmaker, who works as artistic director of the Moscow School of New Cinema, has directed four works since 2007 including Another Sky, awarded the Special Jury Mention at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, among other honours.
Mamuliya has also worked as a screenwriter and is cinema theorist while teaching at the Berlin-based German Academy of Film and Television.
