Georgia's Sandro Bazadze claimed his third European Fencing Championships bronze in Düsseldorf on Wednesday after reaching the semifinal of the continental competition.

Bazadze, a winner of the 2017 European bronze in Tbilisi, secured the medal after winning nine fixtures of Men's Sabre discipline at the tournament but conceding the last four stage match to Russia's Kamill Ibragimov, the eventual runner-up.

The Georgian and Ibragimov ultimately finished behind Veniamin Reshetnikov, another of Russian athletes at the competition, with Bazadze ending up tied for bronze with Germany's Max Hartung.

Earlier in the fixtures the 25-year-old Georgian defeated compatriot Mikheil Mardaleishvili with a score 15-12, before also edging past Hungary's Tamas Decsi in the last 16 round and Andras Szatmari in the quarterfinals.

Bazadze's bronze is the first medal at the Düsseldorf contest for Georgia, with both men's and women's teams from the country competing at the Fencing Championships.

The tournament started on Monday and is set to conclude on Saturday.
