Fines imposed on the violation of fire safety rules will increase ten times according to a draft law prepared by the Emergency Management Service presented to the parliament for discussions.

Violation of or failure to abide by fire safety regulations will warrant a fine of 500 GEL, while currently the fine amounts to 50 GEL.

Moreover, violation of rules governing evacuation and emergency exits, fire alarms, broadcasting during the fire, and evacuation management will be fined from 1,000 to 5,000 GEL while the current law only calls for a 200 GEL fine.

If the rules are violated by a private fire-rescue unit, the owner company will be fined from 5,000 to 10,000 GEL.

Several shopping centres were destroyed by fires in Tbilisi over the last two years affecting hundreds of small businesses located in the damaged area.

An investigation has revealed that fire at the Batumi Leogrand Hotel last year which killed eleven people and injured 21 was caused by a violation of fire-safety standards.
