Export of Georgian agricultural products to EU on rise

The export of Georgian agricultural products to the EU countries is on the rise, says the Ministry of Agriculture of Georgia.
Georgia’s leading exports - wine and spirits, hazelnuts, wine and mineral waters – added value back into the country’s economy.
In the first quarter of 2018, Georgia exported agricultural goods worth $37.8 million which is a 22.1 percent increase compared to the same quarter of 2017.
Specifically, the following products saw a significant increase in export capacity:
- Alcoholic drinks – 112 percent increase y/y (worth $6.3 million)
- Wine – 62 percent increase (worth $1.9 million)
- Mineral water – 21 percent increase (worth $0.7 million)
- Processed hazelnuts – 37 percent increase (worth $0.6 million)
The export of Georgian agricultural products was mainly increased to the following EU countries:
- France – $6.9 million
- Lithuania – $5.5 million
- Spain – $3.7 million
- The Netherlands – $3.3 million
Georgia exported 17.7 million bottles of wine to 43 countries in the first quarter of 2018, announces the Georgian National Wine Agency. In January-March 2018 Georgia generated about $40.47 million from the sale of wine abroad.
Georgian blueberries will soon appear on the shelves of a top Dubai supermarket chain.
Georgia is increasing the export of kiwifruit in Japan, announces the Ministry of Agriculture of Georgia. The Minister of Agriculture Levan Davitashvili stated Japan was an interesting market for Georgia and exporting kiwifruit to Japan was important for the country.
The peach harvest season is over in Georgia and the country has already exported 10,800 tonnes of peach to several foreign countries – mainly to Russia, Azerbaijan and Armenia.
EU-funded projects with a budget of 22 million euros (60 million GEL) implemented by the UNDP and the FAO will provide direct assistance to rural communities and support the governments of Georgia and the Adjara Autonomous Republic in sustainable agriculture and rural development policy.
The programme offers Georgian entrepreneurs to register on the new online platform tradewithgeorgia.com to introduce their products and services to potential foreign partners. Currently more than 20 companies have already started using the system.
The Austrian Development Agency has allocated about €4 million to help Georgia develop organic farming.
