A broad selection of classical works, diverse set of venues and artistic talent from Georgia and abroad is the attraction of the Arts for Education chamber music festival launching in Tbilisi today.

Promoted by organisers as an "intensive classical music festival and academy”, it will place equal focus on concert performances and educational opportunities for its participants.

Marking the first edition of the event, organisers have drawn up a roster of artists that includes Mariam Machaidze and Sooanh Oh on violin, Lilya Tymchyshyn on viola, Johannes Velia on cello, Ketevan Tigashvili on oboe and Matteo Gobbini on piano.

They will perform at settings ranging from the National Parliamentary Library of Georgia to the former Soviet sewing factory-turned art venue Fabrika.

Opening with master classes for instruments including violin, viola, cello, woodwinds as well as chamber music, the maiden festival will later hold four concerts including a major gala.

A concert of music by Clara and Robert Schumann will be the first musical show of the event, where performers "will introduce themselves in a very intimate and personal setting”, said organisers.

Continuing with a show of contemporary works by composers including Arvo Paert, Giya Kancheli and Olivier Messiaen, it will host the audience for a "calm and therapeutic program” at a venue on the outskirts of the city.

With an "extremely active and fun program”, the third show of the festival program will involve performance of works by Bela Bartok, Maurice Ravel and Sergei Prokofiev, before a gala rounds the week-long calendar of events.

The final show will present a collaboration between students from Tbilisi State Conservatoire, No. 1 Central Music School and invited artists at the Conservatoire venue.

The showcased artists will play works by Mikhail Glinka, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Franz Schubert, among other composers.

The Arts for Education festival will conclude in Tbilisi on March 16.
