Two convicted in Batumi Leogrand Hotel fire case

Two individuals have been charged for their responsibility in the Batumi Leogrand fire, which resulted in the deaths of 11 people on 24 November 2017.

A Batumi city court sentenced the technical manager of the hotel, Fatih Yavuz, to five years and six months in prison and the person responsible for storage, Giorgi Mikeladze, to two years.

The investigation found that the two detainees did not fulfil their duties to ensure fire-safety standards at the Leogrand Hotel.

In addition to the 11 people that lost their lives, 21 others were injured in the fire. Ten of the dead were Georgian citizens, one was an Iranian.

After the tragedy, the hotel continued to function after a rebranding and the name the Welmond.
