In recognition of the dozens of people who died during the fire at Leogrand Hotel in Georgia's seaside town of Batumi last night, November 27 has been declared as a day of mourning.

Georgia's Prime Minister Giorgi Kvirikashvili announced the government is mourning the tragedy alongside other citizens.

The national flags on every state building across the country will go down on Monday for those who died during the tragic accident.

Eleven people died and 21 injured during yesterday’s fire in Batumi. Ten of them were Georgian citizens and one – Iranian, the Interior Ministry said.

Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım sent a letter of condolence to Georgian Prime Minister Kvirikashvili.

Sharing Georgian people’s sorrow, Yıldırım, on behalf of the Government of Turkey, wished rapid recovery and welfare to those injured.

A fire broke out at Leogrand Hotel in Batumi last evening.

Investigation of the case has been launched under article #243 of the Criminal Code that considers violation of fire-safety standards.

Nikoloz Siradze Head of Interior Ministry’s emergency service said the evacuation stairs of the hotel did not satisfy the safety norms.
