Batumi, the second largest city in Georgia, has been declared European City of Sport 2019, becoming the first municipality awarded by ACES Europe in the country.
Last July the Evaluation Commission visited the city and afterwards Batumi received the official status of European City of Sport 2019.
The Batumi Mayor, Lasha Komakhidze, was awarded a special gift in the European Parliament in in Brussels by the President of ACES Europe, Francesco Lupattelli.
This year, the city hosted approximately 15 national and international sport events including the 43rd World Chess Olympiad. Furthermore, construction of the new Batumi Sports Palace has finished.
Moreover, the government has launched the construction of a new sport stadium that will be able to host 20,000 spectators.
‘Batumi has quality enough to be European City of Sport with new and modern facilities and with a sport for all sport policies running’ said Lupattelli after this new title.
ACES Europe is an association based in Brussels which annually awards the titles of European Capital, City, Community and Town of Sport.
