Georgia hosts over 3m international travellers during summer tourism season

The summer tourist season in Georgia saw some 3,061,338 international visitors, showing an increase of 10.9 per cent compared to June-August 2017, announces Georgian National Tourism Administration (GNTA).

Of these 3 million, 1,702,015 were tourists, which is 15.8 per cent more compared to the same period of 2017.

Between January-August 2018 a total of 5,895,914 international visitors visited Georgia of which 3,235,800 were tourists.

Year-on-year, the number of international travellers (tourists, transit, other) increased by 12.2 per cent, while the number of tourists (individuals that spent more than 24 hours in the country) increased by 19.3 per cent.

The majority of foreign travellers were from Azerbaijan (+11%), Russia (+22%), Armenia (+0.3%) and Turkey (+21.1%).

A positive trend was also maintained by visitors from the European Union:

  • Estonia (+98%)
  • The Netherlands (+55%)
  • Romania (+55%)
  • Belgium (+53%)
  • Germany (+50%)

The countries with the most significant increase were:

  • Korea (+139%)
  • China (+92%)
  • Belarus (+44%)
  • Kuwait (+44%)
  • Israel (+35%)

How did Georgia benefit from more visitors?

A total of $1.36 billion was generated from international tourism in Georgia in January-June 2018, which was $305 million more compared to the same period of 2017.

In the first quarter of 2018 international tourism revenue reached $551 million.
Meanwhile, in 2017 international tourism revenue reached $2.7billion, which was $594 million more compared to 2016.
