The National Agency of Public Registry (NAPR) continues to add different tourist locations in Georgia to Google Maps and the government hopes this will ensure that tourists coming to Georgia will be able to travel around the country using GPS.
The NAPR has already completed its field work to chart and photograph all major locations in Tbilisi as a part of the project to develop a national navigation system.
The project aims to create a national database for Georgia and integrate it in leading navigation systems worldwide, such as Google and TomTom.
"An international carmaker is going to issue a model with the TomTom application where Georgia will also be included for the first time. This will ensure that tourists will be able to travel in Georgia using GPS. They will not need paper maps anymore,” the Minister of Justice Thea Tsulukiani said, speaking at the extraordinary parliamentary session on June 19 while presenting her action plan for coming years.
The prepared database already includes over 41,000 objects such as education, health and non-governmental organisations, culture, sport, leisure and entertainment facilities, banks and ATMs, tourism and service centres.
The project has also described all large and small roads of Tbilisi with accompanying traffic signs and other information.Georgia is the first South Caucasian country to cooperate with global leading navigation systems and integrate its database with them.
