An 18th century Irish castle, now serving as a major governmental complex, is hosting a display of photographs of historical Georgian costumes to mark the centennial of the First Democratic Republic of Georgia.

The Dublin Castle, located on Dame Street in the capital, has lent the space of its State Apartments for the exhibition co-organised by the Georgian Embassy and Tbilisi’s Art Palace venue.

Within it, photographs of national costumes dating between 12th to 19th centuries, from Art Palace collections, are up for viewing for visitors.

[The exhibition] Georgian National Costume vividly reflects the history of Georgia, the values and cultural diversity of its people.”
The costumes range in style from the middle ages to the end of the 20th century, and present an insight into the culture and history of Georgia, the first nation in the Caucasus region to produce fabric”, said a preview for the event that opened on May 30.

The exhibits will include clothing worn by Georgian royal and noble families over the ages.

Art Palace experts have worked on many of the costumes to preserve their fabric and authentic look.

Their work on fabric was recently recognised with the European Union Prize for Cultural Heritage for the project Textile from Georgia.

The Dublin exhibition will be open for visitors through August 31.
