Polish national and public holiday May 3rd Constitution Day was celebrated in the Georgian capital of Tbilisi yesterday.

Georgian Foreign Minister Mikheil Janelidze congratulated the Polish nation on their big day at a reception yesterday evening.

Janelidze said that the Constitution Day of Poland is a watershed marking the day when the first modern constitution was adopted in Europe.

He also focused on centuries-old friendly relations between Georgia and Poland emphasising that April 28 marked the 25th anniversary of the restoration of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

Janelidze described Poland’s successful transformation as something that sets an example for Georgia to follow on its path to European integration and expressed his hope that the two countries will maintain fruitful co-operation in the future.

The reception was attended by foreign diplomats and invited guests.

This year marks the 226th anniversary of the ratification of the 3 May Constitution by the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth legislature in 1791. It is claimed to be the very first of its kind in Europe and the second one in the world, preceded only by the United States Constitution ratified a year earlier.
