Georgia is encouraging the development of tea production in the country by bringing a new tea processing plant to its region of Imereti.

The National Agency of State Property leased 173,663 m2 land for 25 years in the village of Tsknori.

Local company Geo-Flowers will be responsible for the establishment of a new tea processing plant which will be supported by the ‘Georgian Tea Plantation Rehabilitation’ state program.

The main goal of the program is to make maximum use of Georgian tea potential and the promotion of high-quality tea production, including production of organic teas.

The program aims to support the rehabilitation of privately as well as state owned abandoned tea plantations and establishment of tea primary processing modern enterprises.

The ‘Georgian Tea Plantation Rehabilitation’ state program was created by Georgia’s Agriculture and Economy Ministries in November 2015, and aimed to rehabilitate 7,000 hectares of tea plantations in Georgia over several years.

The first stage of the program started in February 2016 and intended to support local and biologically clean tea production in the country.

Within the program the state will also support small tea processing businesses and launch certification programs together with donor organisations to ensure the tea produced in Georgia meets high standards.

All these efforts will make it easier for Georgian tea to be exported to European markets.
