Georgia’s external trade up 18% in January-March

Turkey, Russia and Azerbaijan were Georgia’s top trade partners this year, shows preliminary data from the National Statistics Office of Georgia (Geostat).

Georgia’s top 10 trade partners in January-March 2017 made for 66 percent of the country’s total trade turnover, with Turkey ($331 million), Russia ($255 million) and Azerbaijan ($207 million) filling the top three spots.

Trade with EU countries

Trade turnover with European Union (EU) countries increased by 26 percent year-on-year (y/y) and amounted to $641 million, said Geostat.

Exports were worth $159 million (44 percent higher), while imports reached $481 million (21 percent higher).

Trade with CIS countries

The external trade turnover of Georgia with the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) countries totalled $751 million in January-March 2017 – a 35 percent higher compared to the same period of 2016.

Exports were worth $205 million (59 percent higher) while imports equalled $546 million (27 percent higher).

Georgia's top exported commodities in January-March 2017 were:

• Copper ores and concentrates (worth $98 million, or 17 percent of total exports)
• Ferro-alloys (worth $81 million, or 14 percent of total exports)
• Motor cars (worth $35 million, or six percent of total exports)

What are Georgia's main imports?

Georgia's top imported commodities were:

• Petroleum gases and other gaseous hydrocarbons (worth $138 million, or eight percent of total imports)
• Petroleum and petroleum oils (worth $122 million, or seven percent of total imports)
• Motor cars (worth $105 million or six percent of total imports)
