A new autopark is being built in Georgia’s capital of Tbilisi to provide parking spots for 377 buses.
Spread over six hectares, the Tbilisi autopark will be opened in May of this year where 143 new blue buses will be parked.
The autopark will also include service centres, a washing facility, petrol and compressed natural gas (CNG) stations, administration and other buildings.
The total cost of the project is around 19 million GEL (about $7.97m/€7.51m*), announced Tbilisi City Hall.
143 new gas-operated buses are already in Tbilisi and will be added to the fleet step by step.
This Saturday five new buses will start operating on route 9. So far there are 40 new buses operating in Tbilisi on routes 61, 51, 37 and 87.
Tbilisi City Hall is also going to purchase smaller buses in the future, said Mayor David Narmania who visited the construction site of new Tbilisi Auto Park today together with European Union Ambassador in Georgia Janos Herman and Bruno Balvanera of European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD).
Tbilisi City Hall started the modernisation of Tbilisi the transport fleet in September 2016. The total cost of the project was €34 million where the EBRD invested €27 million and the Eastern Energy Efficiency and Environment Partnership of the EU provided €7 million.
