By July 20, all 143 new buses that Tbilisi has purchased to modernise its public transport fleet will begin operating.

Tbilisi Mayor David Narmania announced the news yesterday.

Three days before the capital city welcomes new buses, a new autopark was opened to provide parking spots for these 143 and 234 other buses.

Spread over six hectares, the Tbilisi autopark that opened today includes service centres, a washing facility, petrol and compressed natural gas (CNG) stations, administration and other buildings.

The total cost of the project was around 19 million GEL (about $7.97m/€7.51m*).

The new, blue buses that will be parked there are more environmentally-friendly than the current yellow ones as they run on compressed natural gas (CNG).

Furthermore, new buses are able to accommodate people with wheelchairs and other disabilities.

Tbilisi City Hall started the modernisation of Tbilisi’s transport fleet in September 2016.

The total cost of the project was €34 million in which the EBRD invested €27 million and the Eastern Energy Efficiency and Environment Partnership of the EU provided €7 million.
