A fire broke out at one of the hydro energy plants in Imereti region, western Georgia this evening. However, the population living in nearby villages is out of danger, the Georgian Interior Ministry said.

The Emergency Service of the ministry managed to localize the fire and was successful in containing it. In total, 40 fire-fighters and eight vehicles from Tskaltubo, Kutaisi and Zestaponi municipalities fought the fire.

The Emergency Service received the signal about the fire at 17:13. According to preliminary information, the fire was caused by an explosion near the hydro energy plant.

The investigation of the exact reason of the fire is underway.
