Foreign Minister, UN refugee agency representative discuss issues of IDPs

Georgian Foreign Minister Mikheil Janelidze has met with Johannes van der Klaauw, the Representative of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to the South Caucasus.

At today’s meeting the parties spoke about the heavy humanitarian situation that the people face at the Russian occupied regions of Georgia – Abkhazia and Tskhinvali (South Ossetia).

Jaelidze and van der Klaauw also discouraged illegal decisions of de-facto officials, including:

  • Discrimination of ethnically Georgian population;
  • Restrictions to the freedom of movement;
  • Right to receive education in native language.

Speaking about the importance of ensuring safe return of internally displaced persons to their original homes, the UNHCR Representative welcomed the steps that the Georgian government has made for improving their lives during displacement.
