Georgian PM meets with German Chancellor

Georgian Prime Minister Giorgi Kvirikashvili has met with German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Berlin today.

The meeting was part of Kvirikashvili’s official visit to Germany.

The pair focused on the dynamic of Georgian-German cooperation in politics and economy, Kvirikashvili’s press office said in a statement following the meeting.

Kvirikashvili briefed Merkel about ongoing reforms and the economic state of Georgia. He stressed that Georgia has a good environment for foreign investments and added that international rankings prove this.

"According to the Prime Minister, Georgia’s completed and ongoing reforms, EU Association Agreement, Free Trade Agreement and visa waiver, coupled with stable and democratic political environment, puts in place all necessary conditions for the German business community take greater interest in doing business in Georgia, which will bring more tangible results to both countries", the PM’s press office said.

The pair also discussed global security issues and Georgia’s role in this regard. They stressed Georgia’s participation in a peacekeeping mission in Afghanistan.

"Germany commends the role of Georgian soldiers in this mission”, the press office said.

The meeting also discussed the Russia-Georgia conflict and the situation in Georgia’s Russian-occupied regions. They stressed that the steps Georgia takes are directed at the peaceful resolution of the conflict.

Kvirikashvili congratulated Merkel that her party won the recent elections in Germany. He said that this victory was "very important for Europe”.

Merkel’s party, the Christian Democrats (CDU) has recently won German federal elections, making Merkel a Chancellor for the fourth term.

Kvirikashvili was the first world leader whom Merkel met after the elections.
