Georgia’s Minister of Internal Affairs Giorgi Mgebrishvili stated today that close cooperation between the Interior Ministry and the Central Election Commission (CEC) for the upcoming local elections is one of the key preconditions for a safe and transparent election environment.

The statement came after the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between the Ministry and CEC, which envisages various joint election activities.

Last year’s parliamentary elections were conducted in line with high European standards. I believe that the close cooperation between the Central Election Commission and the Interior Ministry will again be the precondition for a safe, fair and transparent election environment,” Mgebrishvili stated.

The Memorandum signed today refers to cooperation between the two bodies both in pre-election and election periods.

Local elections are scheduled to be held on October 21.
