The Alliance of Patriots, one of the three political parties that made it into the new Parliament of Georgia, has named one of its party leaders, Irma Inashvili, as its candidate for Tbilisi Mayor for the municipal elections this October.
Inashvili was introduced by co-leader of the party David Tarkhan-Mouravi this afternoon. He also announced that the Alliance of Patriots is planning a series of protest rallies during the pre-election period.
"We need a figure who will be capable of turn these elections into a political process. Irma Inashvili is such candidate. She is a fighter, a person of principle”, he said.
Tarkhan-Mouravi added that protest rallies will begin in September and will take place not only in Tbilisi but in other cities too. The main request of the rallies will be to change the election system.
Inashvili, 47, was born in Tbilisi. She is a journalist and in1993 she covered the war in Abkhazia. She spent 13 months and 13 days living in the war zone. She also worked for the Georgian Public Broadcaster for 10 years, after which she established the Obiektivi Union of Journalists. She is married with two children.
Inashvili, After European Georgia’s Elene Khoshatria, is the second female candidate named as a mayoral candidate in Tbilisi.
