Georgia ready to host world’s youth rugby championship in May

Sports fans get excited. Georgia is preparing to hold the world’s Under 20 rugby championship in May.

Per the official schedule, the initial rounds will be played in the Georgian capital of Tbilisi and in the western town of Kutaisi on May 31, June 4 and 8. The semi-finals will take place on June 13 and the final match will take place on June 18.

Hosting a delegation of experts from World Rugby (formerly the International Rugby Board) today, Georgian Minister of Sport and Youth Affairs Tariel Khechikashvili said the closer the World Rugby U20 Championship approaches, the more meetings will be held to ensure that the sports event will be held with proper oversight and administration.

Together with the Georgian Rugby Union we will do our best to make this celebration happen and present Georgia to the whole world”, the Minister said.

This will be the first time that Georgia will be hosting the tournament, opening its doors to sports fans from around the world.

During his two-day visit to Georgia, World Rugby representatives visited the stadiums and observed preparations for the event.

The Georgian Rugby Union is making an excellent job of working really hard to drive interest amongst the public. With the Ministry’s support, we are confident that the tournament will be a success”, Tournament Director at World Rugby Simon Kibble said.

Rugby is one of the most popular sports in Georgia currently holding the 12th place in the World Rugby Rankings.
