"[Georgia is] the strongest democracy in the region; democracy that walks to the West and is still fighting to keep independence from the Russian bear”, he said.
He added that many people in the West do not realise that Russia continues to move the "borders” of the two occupied Georgia territories and takes more and more land every day.
"A farmer may wake up in the morning and see that the fence line has been moved and now he is in the occupied territory that Russia occupies, whereas before he was not”, said the Congressman.
He also stressed that Georgia is the only country in the world that is a non-NATO partner and still has troops on the ground in Afghanistan, serving alongside Americans and dying alongside Americans.
"It tells of Georgia’s commitment to freedom and to the West”, he said.
In Poe’s words, the US desires that Georgia remains a democracy and continues to work to the West.
"The US wants to continue to work with Georgia and make it a stronger ally”, he said.
