German diplomats have awarded today Georgian captain Levan Shubitidze with the bronze Bundeswehr Medal Of Honour for successfully completing the Resolute Support Mission in Afghanistan.
German Ambassador to Georgia Heike Peitsch gave a certificate to Georgian serviceman, while German Attaché and Vice-Colonel Franz-Josef Nolte pinned himself a Bundeswehr Medal Of Honour on Shubitidze’s chest.
This prestigious military award was given to Georgian serviceman for rendering outstanding services to the German armed forces in 2016 in Afghanistan where he was among Georgian soldiers who protected Germany’s Consulate from a heavily-armed suicide bomber.
Georgian soldiers reacted quickly after a suicide bomber rammed a truck into the German Consulate in the city of Mazar-e-Sharif, which claimed the lives of at least six civilians and wounded over 100 people.

Following the bravery actions of Georgian soldiers the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Germany issued a special statement last year thanking Georgian security forces for acting quickly to control the situation and prevent further loss of life.
The German statement said security forces of Afghanistan and Georgian soldiers serving in the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation’s (NATO) Resolute Support Mission played a key role to repulse the attack.
