Georgian Independence Day celebrated all around the world

Georgian Independence Day is being celebrated all around the world with a variety of events as today is its 26th anniversary of its independence from the Soviet Union.

In particular, Georgian diplomatic missions have organised cultural, educational and entertainment activities in the countries they operate in.

Ethiopia

An exhibition introducing all the three types of Georgian alphabet will be held in Ethiopia, where the guests will have the opportunity to taste Georgian wine.

France

Sorbonne University in the French capital of Paris is hosting Georgian musician Elga Porchkhidze and a Tamarinio ensemble where a short documentary will also be screened about Georgia.

Latvia

Tower of Riga City Council will be illuminated in the Colors of the National Flag of Georgia starting on 26 of May from 21:30 till morning of 27th. The same day, Georgian folk music will be sounded in the square in front of the Riga City Council.

Lithuania

Lithuania is also celebrating Georgian Independence Day with a special reception in its capital city of Vilnius including exhibitions on historic relations between Georgia and Lithuania, Georgian alphabet and manuscripts as well as women from Georgia.

The guests will taste Georgian traditional dishes and sweets. A giant Georgian flag will also be waving from the National Library of Lithuania all day long.

Norway

At a special reception in Norway’s capital of Oslo, Georgia’s tourism potential will be introduced to guests, Georgian national costumes will also be showcased, a concert delivered and handmade jewelry by Georgian designer Mancho Zaridze exhibited during the reception.

Armenia, Moldova, Qatar and South Africa are also among the countries that join today’s celebration of Georgia’s Independence Day with different events throughout the day.

Up to now Argentina, Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Denmark, Estonia, Fiji, Germany, Iran, Turkey, Ukraine and the United States have dedicated various events to this special date, while Australia, Belarus, Belgium, China, Greece, India, Japan, Korea, Lichtenstein, Netherlands, Poland, Slovenia, Switzerland, Turkmenistan and the United Kingdom are the next in the list.

This year, Georgia’s Independence Day coincides with 850 years since the birth of the Georgian poet who penned the iconic poem, The Knight in the Panther’s Skin. Thus, the slogan of this year’s Independence Day is ‘I come from the country of Rustaveli’.
