Rikoti tunnel closes overnight April 25-26

The main tunnel connecting the country’s east and west will be closed for the next two nights to undergo routine maintenance.
Traffic will be unable to move through the tunnel from midnight tonight to 7am tomorrow morning. The tunnel will reopen during the day and close again for the same time overnight on April 26.
Today Georgia’s Road Department announced the tunnel would be closed to all traffic during these two early morning periods.
The agency said the temporary restrictions were imposed so the tunnel could undergo routine cleaning and general maintenance, including electro-mechanic works.
Drivers who wish to travel along this route are advised to use a bypass road.

The construction of the longest tunnel in Georgia has ended. The 8,5 km-long Kvishkheti-Zvere tunnel is part of Tbilisi-Makhinjauri mainline. Georgian Prime Minister Giorgi Kvirikashvili said the project will play important role in developing the country’s infrastructure.

The Roads Department of Georgia has signed an agreement for the reconstruction of the fourth section of the Rikoti Pass – a mountain pass which divides Georgia into its eastern and western parts – with Guizhou Highway Engineering Group and China National Technical Import and Export Corporation, announced the department earlier today.
