Georgian farmers living near the so-called Administrative Boundary Line (ABL) with Georgia’s occupied Tskhinvali (South Ossetia) region are receiving special support from the central Government to cultivate their agricultural lands and enjoy a good harvest.

Farmers living in 11 villages near the ABL have already received special cards that allow them to plough their lands, receive fertilizer and other agricultural necessities free of charge.

A total of 406 famers in the area have received the Plough Cards. Already 232,086 hectares of agricultural land have been plough by state-owned firm Mekanizatori Ltd, using funds from their Plough Cards.

On the Plough Card farmers were able to receive $60 USD for every hectare of land they owned. The money would be spent on cultivating their land.

Furthermore, 169 of the 405 farmers receive special Agro Cards, which allowed farmers to receive fertilizers, seeds and other necessities for free. The amount of money on these cards depended on the size of the farmer’s land.

These activities were part of the Government-initiated Agriculture Support Project, which launched in 2012.

This year 800,000 Georgian farmers will benefit from the project.
