A special memorial has been built at the Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan paying homage to a Georgian soldier who was killed last year while serving there in a NATO peacekeeping mission.

A special ceremony was held at the base yesterday to officially open the memorial for Georgian Armed Forces (GAF) Private First Class Vasil Kuljanishvili. The ceremony was led by the Georgian contingent currently serving at the base.

Kuljanishvili was killed on September 22, 2015 in an enemy attack while patrolling the Bagram Air Base within the NATO-led Resolute Support mission.

The contribution he made to his unit and the mission was underlined by many, including those who spoke at the ceremony.

His actions, his heroics made him forever alive and we will always remember him. I would like to again express my condolences to warriors and commanders of the 43rd Battalion. It is a source of pain but also a joy to know our country has such heroes," said Georgia's Senior Military Representative in Afghanistan Colonel Giorgi Bliadze.

The memorial featured a stone with an inscription that paid homage to the service and dedication of Kuljanishvili, a soldier in the IV Infantry Brigade 43rd Battalion of the GAF.

The ceremony also featured addresses by Georgia's allies in the peacekeeping mission. The United States (US) Army Task Force Buffalo Commander Lieutenant Colonel Matthew McCulley expressed his gratitude to the GAF personnel for their "service" and "sacrifice" in Afghanistan and in other countries where they served.

Meanwhile Kuljanishvili's name was carved into a memorial stone at the US’ Fort Campbell base in November last year within a ceremony to honour the memory of service members who had died during the Resolute Support mission in Afghanistan.

Kuljanishvili died last September after he and another Georgian serivceman were attacked while patrolling the Bagram Air Base.

Sergeant Paata Rostobaia, the other GAF member patrolling alongside Kuljanishvili, suffered severe injuries in the attack, but recovered after receiving treatment in Germany.
