Acting Prime Minister of Georgia Giorgi Kvirikashvili and the country's President Giorgi Margvelashvili have met the newly-elected Parliament Speaker of Georgia Irakli Kobakhidze and congratulated him on his election to the "very important post”.

The meeting was held late yesterday in western Kutaisi and focused on the significance of a smooth interaction and cooperation between the executive and legislative Governments.

The trio stressed the future cooperation between key state institutions, based on mutual respect and recognition of one another’s power, would lead "to the best decision-making for the benefit of the country”.

Prior to the meeting Kvirikashvili said he was confident Kobakhidze would be able to cope with the high demands and his new obligations as Speaker of Parliament.

He stressed the ruling team was eager to "very constructively” support the legislative body and hoped the opposition would choose the same stance.

Kvirikashvili said the new Government, under his leadership, would work in close cooperation with Parliament and this would hugely benefit the people of Georgia.

You will very often see me and ministers in Parliament,” Kvirikashvili told local media after the meeting.

Georgia's Acting PM also commented on alleged amendments to the state Constitution, mentioned by the President in his speech yesterday in Parliament. Kvirikashvili said amending the Constitution of Georgia was not urgent and the process was likely to take a year.

The President would be one of the most important figures involved in amending the Constitution however I believe the constitutional changes should be prepared under Parliament, as the body is tasked for such issues,” Kvirikashvili said.

The new Government is expected to be confirmed by Parliament next week.
