Georgia and Iran are strengthening ties to carry forward millennia-old relations by forging closer ties in internet technology and communication.
Iran's Minister of Communications and Information Technology Mahmoud Vaezi visited Georgia’s capital Tbilisi and met Georgia’s Economy Minister Dimitry Kumsishvili this week.
Increasing the amount of internet exported from Georgia to Iran was one of the topics of discussions.
Georgia’s Minister of Economy announced Iran was interested in expanding its internet capacity and importing more internet from Georgia. Kumsishvili hoped negotiations would continue successfully between the two countries’ private sectors.
Georgia has been supplying internet to Iran through Ucom, a mobile network operator and internet service provider in Armenia via a fiber optical network. The cable has an initial capacity of up to 40g/bytes and this has been supplied by Georgia to Iran since June 2013.
Meanwhile, the two country officials also discussed the prospects of deepening cooperation in the information technology field.
The Iranian Minister said his country was interested in developing relations with Georgia to boost the economy of both nations and he hoped the next meeting of the joint inter-Governmental economic commission of Iran and Georgia would further deepen the exiting bilateral ties.
He said Georgia and Iran enjoyed a strong partnership and he believed trade turnover between the two nations will further increase once construction of the Iran-Azerbaijan railway section was completed.
