President of Georgia Giorgi Margvelashvili has named his candidate to fill the vacant post of head of the Government of the Autonomous Republic of Adjara.
Today President Margvelashvili named Georgia’s ex-Ambassador to Kazakhstan Zurab Pataridze as his pick to fill the empty leadership role.
The position became vacant last week when the Adjara Government chairperson Archil Khabadze quit the post as he intended to take part in the October 8 Parliamentary Elections.
Before presenting Pataridze as his chosen candidate, President Margvelashvili said he had consulted with the Adjara Autonomous Government and its Ministers, and currently he was in active talks with the Adjara Supreme Council, the legislative body of the region eligible to confirm the Adjara Government head, to provide support for Pataridze.
The Supreme Council of Adjara performs as a legislative body and is composed of 21 deputies, 15 of whom appear in the body through the proportional electoral system, while the remaining six are majoritarian deputies.
The Supreme Council of Adjara must confirm the executive Adjara Government and its Ministers with two thirds of votes. The Adjara Government is responsible before the Council and the President of Georgia.
Elections for the Adjara Supreme Council were scheduled for October 8 – the same day as Georgia’s Parliamentary Elections – where locals of the Autonomous Republic will elect their lawmakers.
