Georgia’s Prime Minister Giorgi Kvirikashvili has today travelled to western Georgia’s Samegrelo region to personally grieve with the family of a young Georgian man who was killed near the Administrative Boundary Line (ABL) separating de facto Abkhazia region from the rest of Georgia on May 19.
Kvirikashvili was accompanied by several cabinet ministers, heads of state agencies and other officials to the village where Giga Otkhozoria, 31, will be buried tomorrow, May 26 on Georgia’s Independence Day.
Otkhozoria was on Georgian-controlled territory when he was gunned down by Russian-controlled border guards stationed near the ABL with breakaway Abkhazia about 2.30pm on May 19.
Video of the incident showed Otkhozoria retreating from a confrontation with the guards when he was shot. After the shooting Otkhozoria was rushed to hospital with six gunshot wounds, including one to the face but he died a short time later.
Today a spokesperson of Georgia’s President announced President Giorgi Margvelashvili would hold a Security Council meeting "in the nearest days”, where the main topic of discussion would be this ABL incident.
Meanwhile Otkhozoria’s death will be heavily discussed at an Incident Prevention and Response Mechanism (IPRM) meeting at Gali on Friday.
For the first time after a four-year pause, the IPRM in Gali will resume on Friday, reported Russian media citing Abkhazian sources.
This forum will let conflicting parties discuss this and similar incidents face-to-face.
The IPRM talks - a special peace-building tool between Georgia and its Russian occupied region of Abkhazia - were suspended in April 2012 after Abkhazia refused to participate.
