Restoration of historic Skuri Church continues

Restoration works of Georgian historical Skuri Church is continuing to give new life to the ancient monument.

Restoration work to preserve and restore unique sites of ancient Georgian monuments is continuing, including work currently ongoing at the Skuri Church in Samegrelo in western Georgia.

Dating back to the 13th Century, Skuri Church is considering to as being one of the most damaged churches in critical condition in the Tsalenjikha municipality.

The main goal of the restoration works was to give new life to the ancient monument and restore the old church to its original style and appearance.

Restoration work of the Skuri Church begun last year by the National Agency for Cultural Heritage Preservation and the Ministry of Culture and Monument Protection.

An Agency representative said the Skuri Church rehabilitation was being implemented in three stages. At the moment, heavy weeding was going on where a statue and its surrounding area were being freed from engulfing plants and then treated with appropriate chemical substances.

Meanwhile in the first phase of the project, the west, north and south frame of the facade were restored by stone bricks.

Now and looking ahead, intensive work is continuing at this site and others to restore Georgia’s historic monuments through the country.
