Georgian designers unite to combat violence against women

Georgian designers are uniting to support the female victims of violence in a charity project called ‘Kindness is Always Fashionable’.
The exhibition of more than 30 designers will open today at 7pm at the House of Europe in Tbilisi and continue until April 30.
At the exhibition, visitors will be able to buy clothes from top Georgian designers, such as Datuna Sulikashvili, Giorgi Shagashvili, Zaliko Berger, Lako Bukia, Teona Tavartkiladze, Giorgi Keburia and many more.
The money allocated from the exhibition will be fully transferred to the beneficiaries of the ‘Survivors for the future’ organisation, which are local women who suffered from violence.
"As you know, violence against women remains one of the main problems in Georgia. Every eleventh woman in marriage is a victim of physical violence, where in 2014 more than 25 women were killed. That is why the active engagement of every group of society is crucial for fighting against this problem,” said the event organisers.
Of the almost 4,000 people questioned, two thirds (68 percent) believed there was no gender equality in the country, women were poorly represented in Parliament and having more women in leading roles would have a positive impact on the country.
Georgia is uniting around a common goal – to stop gender-based violence.
Activists who believed gender equality and women’s rights were crucially important gathered in central Tbilisi today to tell victims of domestic violence they were not alone.
Georgia’s first lady and other prominent female Georgians are taking to the stage to give a voice to women who have lost their lives at the hands of a husband, partner, lover or ex.
A special task force, created to ensure the state appropriately responded to the increasing number of domestic violence cases in the country, held its first meeting today.
A multi-agency group has been established in Georgia following an order of the country’s Prime Minister to tackle the country’s escalating violence problems, including domestic violence.
The old fashioned norm of arranged or forced marriages could soon become a illegal if changes to Georgian law are approved, resulting in a maximum penalty of four years imprisonment.
Public Defender Nino Lomjaria has released the report on human rights, which reads that 151 women have been killed on the basis of gender and domestic violence over the past five years in Georgia.
