Interior Minister Candidate says his priority to fight domestic violence

Today the candidate for the post of Georgia’s Minister of Internal Affairs, Giorgi Mgebrishvili, spoke about his major priorities and future intentions in case if the Parliament re-approves him on the post tomorrow. 

The nominee stated today that the Interior Ministry would be focused on fighting domestic violence and violence against women if he could continue his work as a minister after tomorrow’s voting in the legislative body. 

The Minister Candidate also spoke about other priorities of the Ministry of Internal Affairs under his governance and named the following directions: 

  • Fighting against trafficking;
  • Protecting the rights of inmates; 
  • Fighting against drug trafficking;
  • Combating against so-called "chemistry drug addiction”, when one used various medicines or pills for gaining drug-caused pleasure; 
  • Control of medicines targeted for patients with various psychological problems as some individuals used them as drugs, and;  
  • Supporting of   rising of public awareness to criminal activities and their participation in crime prevention;

The Candidate also said that the functions of the District Inspector would face changes. In particular, the Inspector will be deprived of the rights of investigating of a crime and operative activities.

Mgebrishvili stressed that the only remaining right for the Inspector would be the "friend of a family,” which meant his/her active role in prevention of crime or violence in families. 

The nominee stated that all the activities would increase public trust to police. 

According to the Georgian legislation after the resignation of the Prime Minister Irakli Garibahsvili all the 19 Ministers of the Cabinet were automatically suspended from their power. 

Since the majority candidate for the Prime Minister’s post named the new Cabinet of Ministers, with only one new face in, the Ministers must be approved by the Parliament to fulfill their jobs.
