The pension is increasing for retired citizens living in Georgia’s high mountain areas.

From September 1, 2016 pensioners in Georgia will receive a 35 percent increase in their monthly pension, from 160 GEL to 216 GEL.

Also next year the pension for all retired citizens in Georgia will increase to 180 GEL.

The Georgian Government said it was important to focus on the social needs of citizens while allocating funds in next year’s state budget. One of the Government’s target areas in 2016 was developing Georgia’s mountain regions.

The Government aimed to improve the living conditions of those living in Georgia’s high mountain regions, primarily the elderly who struggled financially. By injecting more money into the development of these mountain areas, the Government aimed to increase financial opportunities for residents and reduce migration from rural areas to the city.

Earlier it was revealed the state pension in Georgia will increase 12.5 percent next year following the Government’s pledge to allocate more than 600 million GEL to better supporting Georgia’s retired community.

From July 2016 the state pension will increase 20 GEL to a monthly total of 180 GEL. The pension is available to women aged 60 and older and men aged over 65.

Parliament of Georgia is due to discuss and approve the 2016 budget today.
