Mitsubishi eyes up Georgia’s energy sector

Representatives from Mitsubishi Corporation – Japan’s largest trading company – are visiting Georgia to explore the country’s investments opportunities.
Mitsubishi Corporation is a global integrated business enterprise that develops and operates businesses across a wide range of industries, including industrial finance, energy, metals, machinery, chemicals, living essentials and environmental business.
Today the Mitsubishi Corporation envoys, led by the corporation’s vice president Hiroshi Miyoshi, met head of Georgia’s National Investment Agency Giorgi Pertaia to discuss investing in Georgia’s energy sector.
The meeting was part of the Japanese delegation’s one-day visit to Georgia.
Mitsubishi Corporation became interested in the post-Soviet country when Georgia’s Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili met head of the Corporation in September 2015.
At the time Garibashvili was involved in the World Economic Forum in China’s major port city Dalian. There the Georgian delegation met representatives of large Chinese companies, as well as Mitsubishi Corporation from Japan.
One of Turkey’s largest companies, Calik Holding, is expanding its business in Georgia.
Company plans to build gas storage and Thermal Power Plant
One of China’s leading engineering firms is expressing its interest to invest in Georgia’s gas and energy sectors.
State-owned enterprise Dongfang Electric has pledged to contribute about $180-$200 million for construction of a 150 megawatt Thermal Power Plant (TPP) in Georgia’s western Tkibuli region.
China and Israel’s largest companies have pledged to invest in Georgia’s energy sector.
Georgia, Iran, Armenia and Russia are deepening cooperation in the energy sector by increasing the efficiency of the countries electrical systems.
Georgia - as a corridor linking Europe and Asia – is a very important country for Japan. Georgia’s Parliament Speaker David Usupashvili said this after he met Japanese parliament officials in Tokyo today.
Japan’s State Minister for Foreign Affairs Yoji Muto says Georgia is a significant player in the region and his country is interested in boosting economic ties with the post-Soviet nation.
Japan is supporting Georgia’s transformation into a regional transport and logistics hub by offering the country $38 million USD.
