An internationally acclaimed master of the ancient Japanese art of paper-cutting (or kirigami) will present his unique works at Tbilisi’s Shalva Amiranashvili Museum of Fine Arts for a week starting tomorrow.

The personal exhibition of Japanese contemporary artist Shu Kubo will feature works of Kirie, a paper cutting technique, completed on traditional Japanese paper washi and combined with ordinary paper, fabric and sand.

The exhibition will be presented within the theme Japonisme in paper and feature works depicting Japanese places, foods and other themes.

Exhibition organisers said Kubo’s technique of layering multiple thin washi, created "a sense of depth and stereoscopy” in his works. Image from www.shu-kubo.com.

Kubo is recognised as one of the great paper-cutting masters, with a critic from The Japan Times calling his works "dynamic and realistic” with "a wide range of colours and textures”.

Kubo’s talents have been recognised all over the world and in his home nation. In 2009 he was granted the status of a Japan Cultural Envoy by the country’s Agency for Cultural Affairs and in recent years has toured countries including Spain, Portugal, Cuba and Russia with his works.

The Tbilisi exhibition will run until November 11 at the Museum, located on Gudiashvili St in Georgia’s capital.
