Contemporary costumes and creative fashion pieces by Georgian artist Nino Chubinishvili, known in her industry as Chubika, is going on display at a New York art gallery for the next two months in what is her first official solo exhibition in the United States (US).

The artists’ commission, presented under the title The Echoes, will feature at the Art in General venue’s Storefront Project Space. The collection was curated by Wato Tsereteli of the Tbilisi-based Centre of Contemporary Art (CCA).

The exhibition opened at the Lower Manhattan venue with a reception on Saturday, September 12.

Exhibition organisers described The Echoes as "an emotive approach to animating both the personal and political, reflecting on Georgia’s fight for independence after the collapse of the Soviet Union in the early 1990s, while also addressing the artist’s personal journey during that period of monumental transition.”

Chubinishvili received her maiden arts degree from Tbilisi’s State Academy of Fine Arts before gaining a postgraduate degree in Fashion Design from the Institute Francais de la Mode in Paris, France. In recent years she has participated at various exhibitions in Germany, Amsterdam and Tbilisi however this will be her first solo exhibition in the US.

The gallery is presenting Chubinishvili’s exhibition in collaboration with the CCA and as part of its International Collaborations program; one of the two projects that promote production of new work by local and international artists.

Founded in 1981, Art in General also organised the annual symposium What Now? that focused on critical issues of art and curation.

The Echoes will continue until November 21.
